8th June Sunday Afternoon Workday & Other News

Hi All,

Apologies for not updating the website for a couple of months but at last I have found time to bring you up to date with progress. The Wildlife Trust are now the new owners of the nature areas associated with Deers Leap Wood, the Boundary Brook, the Canal Feeder, and the woodland around the cricket pitch, all of which is great news. The Pavilions building has been demolished and work is due to start shortly on the new Warwickshire Cricket Club cricket pavilion. The cricket pitch is already being restored to its former glory. Ultimately it will be used by Warwickshire’s 2nd XI and their Juniors (together with the 1st XI when test matches are being played at Edgbaston).

In terms of treework associated with the above nature areas the Trust is overseeing a programme of tree felling and pollarding in order to make the site ‘safe’. Some trees have already been removed but further works are planned for this autumn (once the bird breeding season is over). In their place new native broadleaved tree and shrubs will be planted to increase the biodiversity value of the site.

The new Wildlife Trust part-time ranger is Paul Stephenson who has a lot of experience of such sites and is very approachable. The main office number is 0121 454 1199.

We have successfully been awarded monies to replace much of the boardwalks and steps (which have done sterling service given that they have been in place for approx 25 years). The material has been bought and this Sunday we are making a start on the new steps. So it would be great if we can work together to get them sorted. Given today’s thunderstorms you’ll certainly need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

So look forward to seeing you tomorrow (which if the forecast is correct should be fairly good).

Yours,

Douglas Allenby
